Actress Kim Yoo-jung will star in SBS’s upcoming historical-fantasy romance drama Lovers of the Red Sky. Adapted from the novel written by Jung Eun-Gwol, the same author of the novels which were adapted into hit dramas “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” and “The Moon Embracing the Sun”.
Kim Yoo-jung will be playing the role of Hong Cheon-ki, a real-life historical female painter who was briefly mentioned in Joseon historical records. The novel mixes fact and fiction in its story. She was born blind, but miraculously healed. In the series Hong Cheon-ki (Kim Yoo-jung) is picked as the first female painter of the Dohwaseo (Korean Royal Academy of Painting).
Actor Ahn Hyo-Seop is seen portraying the role of an officer Ha Ram at the Seowoongam an office in charge of astronomy, geography, art of divination, meteorology. He is a blind astrologer but is able to read the stars despite losing his sight. One day she meets Ha Ram (Ahn Hyo-Seop) and is attracted to him.
The actress revealed that she has been a fan of the original novel, which resulted in her taking the title role of the series. Sharing her experience she said, “I tried not to put myself in any boxes, although I also tried to maintain the nuances of the specific historical period in my acting. Factoring in historical elements put limitations in certain gestures and aspects of language,” she said. “So I tried to put focus on how I can make my role convincing and express it in a way so that people, living in modern times, can understand it.”
The series is directed by Jang Tae-yoo, who directed the hit series, “My Love from the Stars,” “Deep Rooted Tree” and “Painter of the Wind.” The director said, “Lovers of Red Sky is a fantasy period series that centers on romance.” “It has the melodrama and fantasy of My Love from the Star, the political tension of Deep Rooted Tree, and the artistic beauty of ‘Painter of the Wind.”
The series is scheduled to premiere on SBS TV on August 30, 2021, and will air on Monday and Tuesday at 22:00 (KST).
