Joe Biden appears to be saving face by cooperating with China after committing the largest geopolitical error in US history. According to a senior US official, US President Joe Biden spoke by phone with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for almost 90 minutes on Thursday, during which both leaders discussed the importance of not allowing competitiveness between the world’s two largest economies to veer into confrontation.

Since Trump’s era, relations between China and the United States have deteriorated significantly over the last decade. This is Joe Biden’s second call with Chinese President Xi Jinping since taking office.

According to a White House statement, the two leaders had “a comprehensive, strategic discussion,” which included “areas where our interests, beliefs, and perspectives diverge.”

As per the senior US source, the discussion centred on economic difficulties, climate change, and COIVD-19.

The call was described as “frank” and “in-depth” by Chinese state media, with President Xi saying that US policies against China causes enormous challenges in bilateral relations.

Both parties agreed to keep frequent contact and to ask working-level staff to boost communication, according to the Chinese report.

Since Xi and Biden’s first conversation in February, sporadic high-level discussions have yielded little progress on a variety of problems, ranging from climate change to human rights to the origins of COVID-19.
